SCENES FROM AROUND TOWN
When I was asked to exhibit some of my photographs here in the library I immediately thought of the many photos I've made in Hopkinton and Contoocook over the past 30 plus years. Throughout my 38-year career as a news photographer I've documented the people, events and scenery of New Hampshire for a number of publications. Many times I've turned to our town for subject matter both for assignments and opportunities to capture what is often the essence of New Hampshire's culture. Hopkinton embodies many of the traditional values that make our Granite State such a unique and desirable society. Our appreciation for its natural beauty and our rich cultural life speaks to the value we pi ace on being grounded in the core values that make for a strong sense of community. The annual parades and celebrations are well attended by many citizens from widely varying backgrounds. The strong sense of patriotism is evident in the annual Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day observances. The consistent lively and high level of participation in town government, elections and the annual town and school meetings further demonstrates it. Above all the people who make up our community contribute to the character of the town, which is very much the essence of the New Hampshire we most cherish. The photographs I've assembled for this exhibit are meant to illustrate many of these qualities. I have chosen just a sample of the many I have made, hoping to convey a portrait of our community, its people and natural beauty. Several of the photos date back many years and are a reminder of people and events of the past. I've had the privilege to share many of these photos with the readers of the New Hampshire Union Leader where I've worked for over 20 years and before that for the New Hampshire Times of the 1970's. It's a pleasure to share these with my fellow citizens of our great community.
