The Bank Building (Kirk Block) by Mrs. Bernard Davis & Mrs. Edward McCabe   The “Kirk Block” would seem to be one of the early buildings in Contoocook, probably dating from the very early 1800’s. It was the site of the first public house in Contoocook. It ceased to exist in that capacity in 1834. In the middle 1800’s, the building was known as the “Curtice Block” and housed the Curtice, Rand & Co. general store. Arthur Huntoon ran the Curtice store in 1890, which accounts for the building being known at the “Huntoon Block” in the early 1900’s. In the late 1800’s, the building housed the Post Office at its southern end and the library upstairs. The Public Service Company of New Hampshire occupied a group floor area from 1938 to 1970.   In May, 1964, branch banks of the Mechanicks National Bank and the New Hampshire Savings Bank opened on what had previously been the site of the Post Office. In 1970, the office space was enlarged so that the New Hampshire Savings Bank occupied what had previously been the Public Service Company and the Mechanicks National Bank - now the Bank of New Hampshire, National Association, as the result of a merger - used the space previously accommodating the two banks. These final renovations took place under the able direction of the present Branch Managers, Mrs. Barbara McCabe of the Bank of New Hampshire, N.A. and Mr. Gordon Hulburt of the New Hampshire Savings Bank.   We especially thank Dotty Graziano for the sketch and Joan Holmes for the use of the booklet, “Hopkinton, New Hampshire, 1765-1965.”   Mrs. Bernard Davis Emerson Hill Road   Mrs. Edward McCabe School Street
