The High School
by Mrs. Pertice Gaskill
The High School had been built in 1903 next to the
Freewill Baptist Church in Contoocook. This building accommodated the grade
school pupils as well as high school classes. It was torn down when the new
High School on Park Avenue was built in 1953. In 1950-1951 there were six
teachers in the high school besides the principal.
From former students in this building, I learned that the
students could jump up and down on the upstairs floor and they could close
the downstairs windows. If everyone that was in the back of the top floor
started to rock back and forth the whole building seemed to move. The
principal used to stand in the second story window and watch the students so
they wouldn't leave the school grounds and go to the store.
From an old booklet about Hopkinton it states that “The
schools of Hopkinton have since the early days ranked high. All the
elementary schools are graded and in charge of competent teachers and follow
courses of study prescribed by the State Department of Education. A high
school that fits for college and community life is located at Contoocook. It
provides courses in Classics, English, Agriculture, Domestic Science. The
Schools are under state supervision and maintain as high a standard as any
town in the state."
I enjoyed doing the square and my thanks to Dr. Lightfoot
for the picture of the high school and to Dotty Graziano for the drawing of
the square. To Ty Houston for his gray shirt and Tess Tardy for the yellow
windows and green bushes and my friends and fami1y for the encouragement and
patience
