Old A & P Block
by Mrs. Doris Coen Currier
I am not positive of the exact date of this block. It has
had many owners, some of them are Harry Marshall, W. F. Davis, Mr. Coolidge,
Mrs. Danforth, and Mr. Metro. These owners ran a grocery store, where the
carpet and furniture store is now.
Mr. Irving Hicks rented the grocery store part from Mrs. Danforth. When Mr. Hicks owned it he delivered groceries in his new Model T
Ford Truck. He went to the outlying districts of Contoocook. I can remember
riding with him when he went to the Stumpfield district. Each district had a
special day of the week to have their groceries delivered.
After Mr. Hicks gave up the grocery business the A & P
Company rented this place from Mr. Metro.
The other part of the building has had many different
kinds of shops. Among them was a millinery shop, where hats were fashioned;
a dentist; a jewelry shop; an ice cream parlor; a restaurant; a store that
sold refrigerators; a beauty shop; and also an upholstery shop.
There have always been apartments upstairs. The building
is now occupied by a dentist, a bookstore, and a furniture and rug store.
The apartments upstairs have all been newly renovated by
Mr. Damelio, who is now the owner of this building.
